| Strategies The primary objective of the National Horticulture Development Initiative is to increase local production of fruit and vegetables. |

| Several restraining aspects have been identified. The emerging farmers, especially those in the so called communal areas, do not have the know-how to produce on a commercial scale. Those producers are in need of training. All farmers experience difficulties to access the local available markets and thus development of marketing infrastructures to serve all producers will have to be developed. Importers of fresh fruit and vegetables seem to be rather insensitive to the marketing needs of the local producers. To create awareness for local sourcing, a controlling system for the importation of horticulture products should be in place. In an effort to facilitate the needs of all stakeholders, including producers as well as traders, information regarding the horticulture sector should be available. Once the marketing aspects have been addressed, attention can be directed to ways and means to increase production by addressing aspects such as credit facilities and the introduction of new technology. All these aspects have been addressed or are in the process of development and for more detail information, a short description of the different projects is available. |
